Next week, a mainstay of children's television will reach a milestone: Sesame Street will have been on the air for 40 years. Premiering Nov. 10, 1969, Sesame Street was a breakthrough television program that opened the door for hundreds of children's television programs to follow.
While some characters have come and gone, and some have subtly changed their personality (Cookie Monster tries to have a more balanced diet and Oscar the Grouch isn't quite as grouchy as he used to be), the initial concept has remained the same. The show still attracts A-list celebrity guests (Michelle Obama, Liam Neeson, Alec Baldwin, Julia Roberts, astronaut Buzz Aldrin and scores more), and it still entertains millions of children (and adults) a year.
Happy birthday Sesame Street! May you have many many more!
