- Must-Watch Network Television: V, airing Tuesday at 8/7c on ABC. I've seen the first episode and I can say without reservation that it is the best new show of the 2009-10 television season. As I wrote in an earlier post, the special effects are feature-film quality; the writing is intelligent and time-relevant; and the acting is first-rate. The first five minutes alone will hook you for the entire season.
- Must Read Book: Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane. Before the film adaptation starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley and a slew of other awesome actors comes out in February, you must read the book. Smart, disarming, terrifying and even funny at times, this book will keep you warm these fall nights — and keep you up waaaaay past your bedtime.
- Must Watch DVD: Heaven with Cate Blanchett and Giovanni Ribisi. The stand-alone movie, which was co-written by the late Krzysztof Kieślowski, was intended to be the first part of a trilogy but the legendary screenwriter passed away before that dream could be realized. The story centers on Phillipa (Cate) — a woman who takes the law into her own hands after police ignore her pleas to arrest the man responsible for her husband's death — as she finds herself not only under arrest for murder but falling in love with an officer (Giovanni). It is a beautiful movie about love, sacrifice, retribution and redemption.
